One child is too many.

Updated: Aug 1, 2018

Every day we hear about the horrific situations that many of our children have endured. It is shocking to our sensitivities but unfortunately it is only the tip of the iceberg. Many more cases go without media coverage and sometimes without being reported. In 2017 the figures are staggering in the counties we serve. In Medina county, which is predominately rural, there were 378 investigations of abuse or neglect. That equates to 30.1 per 1000 child population. In Uvalde county, which is predominately rural, there were 301 investigations of abuse and neglect. That equates to 38.1 per 1000 child population. In Real county, which is predominately rural, there were 34 investigations of abuse and neglect. That equates to 56.4 per 1000 child population. In Bexar county, which is predominately urban, there were 15,575 investigations of abuse and neglect. That equates to 30.5 per 1000 child population.

While the attention of many resources are focused in Bexar county, many rural counties go unnoticed and the resources are lacking. These counties are struggling to keep up with the needs of these children. The needs are not only financial, they are also lacking in foster families. It is extremely important to have the ability to place these children closer to their community and schools. It is our hope that we can assist these areas by providing both financial resources and education regarding fostering.
